MRC grading system of muscle power

Muscle power grading is a system used to assess the strength of a patient's muscles. The grading follows the Medical Research Council (MRC) scale, which ranges from 0 to 5:

 

Grade

Description 

No contraction visible or palpable.

Muscle contraction is visible or palpable, but no movement occurs.

2

Movement occurs, but only when gravity is eliminated.

3

Movement against gravity, but not against resistance. 

4

Movement against gravity and some resistance, but the muscle is weak. 

5

Normal strength; full movement against gravity and full resistance.
