Severe acute malnutrition (SAM)

SAM is defined by:

1. Weight-for-height z-score of < -3 SD 

2. Mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) of < 115 mm (11.5 cm) 

3. Presence of nutritional bipedal edema of both feet


Presence of any one or more of the following criteria indicates severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in children.


NOTE: Mid upper arm circumference (MUAC) is not typically used for children under 6 months of age.
