Bicipital groove

Overview- In this article we covered.

1. Greater Tubercle
2. Lesser Tubercle
3. Intertubercular Sulcus or bicipital groove- Location, attachment, and content.

• Before reading Bicipital groove, we will talk about the external features and attachment of humerus bone, so that we can easily understand all points of Bicipital groove.

• We divide it into three parts to read the external features and attachment of humerus bone– Upper end, shaft, and lower end.

• Here we are discussing only the upper end of the humerus because the Bicipital groove is present on the upper end of the humerus bone.

■ Upper end of humerus bone

The upper end of the humerus has a greater tubercle, lesser tubercle, and intertrochanteric sulcus or Bicipital groove. (For detail see Figure-1)

(Anatomical neck, morphological neck, and surgical neck are also present on the upper end of the humerus bone.)

1. Greater tubercle-

• As the name itself is clear, it is larger in size as compared to the lesser tubercle.
• On the basis of size, we can easily identify the greater and lesser tubercle on the humerus bone.
• Attachment: Three muscles (Supra Spinatous muscle, Infra Spinatus muscle, and Teres minor muscle) are attached to it.

NOTE: You’ll even read it in the rotator cuff anatomy (Shoulder joint).

2. Lesser tubercle-

• As the name itself is clear, it is smaller in size as compared to the greater tubercle.
• On the basis of size, we can easily identify the greater and lesser tubercle on the humerus bone.
• Attachment: Subscapular muscle are attached to it. (One end of this muscle are attach to the subscapular fossa of scapula bone and another end of this muscle are attach to the lesser tubercle of humerous).

NOTE: You’ll even read it in the rotator cuff anatomy (Shoulder joint).

3. Intertubercular sulcus or Bicipital groove- It is described below into three points- Location, Attachment, and Content.
1. Location-

• It is present on the upper end of the humerus bone, between greater and lesser tubercle (trochanter). (For detail see Figure-1)

(NOTE: Greater and lesser trochanter are present on the upper end of Femur bone.)

2. Attachment- (For detail see Figure-1)

• We can easily understand the attachment of intertubercular sulcus (Bicipital groove), into given below three parts

(Mnemonic: Lala between two major bodyguards.)

A. Lateral lip of Bicipital groove – Pectoralis major muscle attached to it.
B. Floor of Bicipital groove- Lattismus Dorsi muscle attached to it.
C. Medial lip Bicipital groove- Teres major muscle attached to it. (This muscle is supplied by the Lower subscapular nerve)

3. Content-

A. Artery- An ascending branch of *ACHA are present in the Bicipital groove.

(*ACHA and *PCHA both are the branch of 3rd part of the Axillary artery)

*ACHA- Anterior Circumflex Humeral Artery.
*PCHA- Posterior Circumflex Humeral Artery.

B. Muscle- Long Head (Short Head) of Biceps brachii muscle (supplied by Musculocutaneous nerve) are present in the Bicipital groove.
